How the Calculations Work

The calculator divides your price per pack by 20 cigarettes to establish a precise cost-per-unit. That unit cost is multiplied by your reported daily consumption across standard calendar intervals (7 days, 30.4 days, 365 days, 5 years, and 10 years). The same number is both the cost of smoking and the money you save by not smoking.

Life Regained Formula: Studies published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) estimate that each cigarette consumed robs an average of 11 minutes of biological life expectancy. When you stop, those lost minutes cease accumulating and your cellular recovery begins. To see the health benefits of quitting hour by hour, open the WHO health recovery timeline.

Use chewing tobacco, dip, or snuff instead? Try the chewing tobacco cost calculator, which works in tins per week.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how much money I save by quitting smoking?

Divide your pack price by 20 to get the cost of one cigarette, then multiply by the number of cigarettes you smoke a day. That is your daily cost. Multiply it by 7 for a week, 365 for a year and 3,650 for ten years. The calculator above does this for you in any of six currencies.

How much does smoking cost per year?

A pack-a-day smoker paying $9.50 a pack spends about $3,468 a year and $34,675 over ten years. Half a pack a day at the same price costs about $1,734 a year. Move the sliders to use your own pack price.

What does a quit smoking benefits calculator show besides money?

This one also counts the cigarettes you no longer smoke and the life expectancy you stop losing, using the BMJ estimate of about 11 minutes per cigarette. For what happens in your body, see the WHO health recovery timeline.

Is there a calculator for chewing tobacco, dip, or snuff?

Yes. Chewing tobacco is bought by the tin, not the pack, so it has its own chewing tobacco cost calculator that works from tins per week and price per tin.
